Happy Earth Day!!

For 50 years on April 22, Earth Day has been celebrated around the globe to promote awareness for the health of our environment.   The 1st Earth Day helped create the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts into law.   Small actions like picking up litter in our community can make an impact and are a step in the right direction.

What should I do for Earth Day?

·         Consider volunteering for the PCHOA landscaping crew to help with maintaining the front entrance and keeping our community beautiful.

·         Eat those leftovers – Many people may not know this, but the more food we waste and do not consume, the more greenhouse gasses are emitted to transport and biodegrade the waste.  If any leftovers still remain, start composting at home.

·         Reuse and recycle.  Donate or sell some items that still have life but are no longer useful to you. The upcoming PCHOA yard sale is a perfect event to do this. Ask how you can participate.

·         Join the PCHOA Storm water committee – improperly managed storm water runoff leads to  flooding, property damage and road hazards.  It impacts us all.  Join this committee to raise awareness and help find solutions to control storm water erosion.

Gardening Tips for March

Spring is just around the corner!  Here are some tips to get your lawn and garden in shape.

·         Apply a layer of mulch around your newly planted shrubs, flowers, and vegetables.

·         You can plant lawn seeds now, if needed.

·         Mow your lawn at recommended heights (St. Augustine and Bahia: 3 to 4 inches; Centipede: 1.5 to 2 inches; Dwarf St. Augustine: 2.5 inches).

·         Check sprinkler systems for any issues and fix, as needed.

·         Prune trees and shrubs before the end of the dormant season.

·         Continue another planting hardy vegetable crops that mature quickly. Good choices are turnips, mustard, radishes, and spring onions.

·         If you have not done so already, you can apply a pre-emergent herbicide to your lawn to help prevent any summer weeds.
